Why Teens Need Money Skills Before College

Most high school students graduate without ever learning how to budget, manage credit, or understand student loans. Then, college hits — with tuition, housing, meal plans, and hidden costs piling up. That’s why financial literacy isn’t just a “bonus skill”… it’s survival.

I’ve seen it firsthand. Students walk into freshman year not realizing they’ll spend nearly $1,200 annually on textbooks alone (College Board, 2023). Or they sign up for a credit card “for emergencies” and end up with thousands in debt before sophomore year.

If schools aren’t teaching it, we have to step up.

5 Core Money Lessons Teens Should Master

1. Budgeting Basics

  • Learn to set up a monthly budget: income, expenses, savings.
  • Track every purchase (apps like Mint or YNAB work, but even Google Sheets does the job).

2. Understanding Student Loans

  • Subsidized vs. unsubsidized loans — what’s the difference?
  • How interest builds over time.
  • What repayment actually looks like after graduation.

3. Credit & Debt

  • What a credit score is and why it matters.
  • How to build credit without falling into debt traps.

4. Saving & Investing Early

  • Why opening a high-yield savings account before college is smart.
  • The magic of compound interest — even $20/month adds up.

5. Avoiding Common College Money Mistakes

  • Meal plan overspending.
  • Renting vs. buying textbooks.
  • Impulse spending with refund checks.

Education Finance 101: Before College Checklist

  • ✅ Understand FAFSA and scholarships.
  • ✅ Learn to read financial aid award letters.
  • ✅ Plan your monthly budget BEFORE moving on campus.
  • ✅ Set up direct deposit for work-study or part-time jobs.
  • ✅ Create a savings buffer for emergencies (even $500 helps).

My Take

When I was in high school, no one explained interest rates or loan terms. The first time I realized what debt felt like was after college. That’s why I created my Financial Literacy Workbook — to give teens the tools I never had.

Because here’s the truth: money mistakes made at 18 can take a decade to fix. But money habits built at 18 can set you up for a lifetime of success.
